CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: The Floorwalkers

Last, but certainly not least, on the list of bands included in our CMJ 2012 coverage are The Floorwalkers. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio this sextet brings a funky/jam sound that is quite different than any other artist on the lineup for the Young Giant Records + Maimed & Tamed showcase at Arlene’s Grocery on 10/18. On their most recent album, 2010’s The Natural Road, the band creates a soulful, southern sound that you wouldn’t expect from a group out of Ohio. Tracks like “Three Wishes” and “Love The Sun Away” remind us of The Sheepdogs, another band with a southern sound, but not so southern roots.

Check out the video for “Three Wishes” below and be prepared for your fair share of soul and funk at Arlene’s Grocery on Thursday 10/18.

CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: Mobley

It can be somewhat difficult to describe Austin-based Mobley’s sound. It’s funky, it’s poppy, it has an ’80s new wave feel to it, but mostly it’s just plain good. With their brand new album, Young Adult Fiction, the band creates a sound that is led by frontman Anthony Watkins’ raw energy and passion. He may not be Stevie Wonder, but the passion in his voice is what makes Mobley’s sound so infectious. You can check out “Torch” on our October Spotify Playlist and watch the video below for “Ego Is” to witness that raw energy and passion that I was talking about, we guarantee you’ll be hooked.

Mobley will be taking the stage at Arlene’s on Thursday October 18 as part of our CMJ showcase with Young Giant Records so make sure to swing by to catch these guys live.

CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: The Hill and Wood

With our most recent posts you may have been thinking that our CMJ showcase with Young Giant Records was all about Tennessee, but today we will be featuring a band from a few hundred miles north in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Hill and Wood is led by Boston native Sam Bush who did the majority of the writing on the band’s debut self-titled album. On their debut The Hill and Wood create layers of sound that are reminiscent of Wilco’s A Ghost Is Born. What THAW has that Wilco doesn’t though (save for “You and I” with Feist) is the element of the male-female harmony on nearly every song. Bush’s voice is joined by Juliana Daugherty to to help create the group’s lush sound and spot-on vocals that can be found throughout their beautifully crafted record.

Check out their video for “The Call” below and make sure to come by Arlene’s Grocery on Thursday October 18 at 12pm to catch the band live.

CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: Vinyl Thief

If you haven’t caught on by now, we are big fans of bands coming out of Nashville and Vinyl Thief is no exception. They will be joining fellow Nashville natives Wild Cub, Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes, and The Electric Hearts at the Young Giant + Maimed & Tamed CMJ showcase at Arlene’s Grocery on October 18. Vinyl Thief most recently released a 3-song EP entitled Rebel Hill back in March and they are already hard at work on their next studio album which is set to be released in early 2013. The electro-rockers have a sound that is not too dissimilar to that of Wild Cub with light, airy synths and catchy vocals that will certainly get you up out of your seat to dance.

Vinyl Thief has already garnered some attention from Paste and Deli Magazine as a band to watch out of Tennessee, and all of this before even releasing their first LP. We expect big things from Vinyl Thief and if you want to say that you saw them before they hit the big-time, then join us at Arlene’s on the 18th!

CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes

Last week for our CMJ 2012 preview series we featured Nashville based group Wild Cub, whose indie-pop sound doesn’t quite align with the conventional Music City scene. This week we turn our ears to fellow Nashvillians Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes, whose jangling riffs and rockabilly influences are more what you would expect from a band reared in the heart of Tennessee. What is most intriguing about Ellsworth’s debut LP Civilized Man is that although tracks like “Hieroglyphs” and “Only One For Me” are country songs at their core, there are also cuts like “Shoe Fits” and “Surrender” that are more in the vein of Wild Cub’s melodious synth-driven rock. They have caught the attention of Paste Magazine as well as Amazon, who named “Shoe Fits” the #7 song of 2011 right alongside the likes of M83, Adele, Jay-Z and Ryan Adams.

Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes are guaranteed to delight next week at CMJ so make sure to head over to Arlene’s Grocery on Thursday October 18 from 12-6pm to catch them at the Young Giant + Maimed & Tamed showcase. And while you try to contain your excitement for next week, check out Daniel Ellsworth’s intense video for “Bleeding Tongue.”

CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: Motive

With CMJ 2012 kicking off in less than a week, we still have plenty more music to share before the Young Giant Records and Maimed & Tamed showcase at Arlene’s Grocery on Thursday October 18 from 12-6pm. Today we will be sharing a new video from Brooklyn via Seattle group Motive. “It’s Illicit” finds the band buried in dirt, eating earthworms and turned to plant zombies by a very creepy bearded man. Sounds like my kinda Wednesday afternoon.

In addition to playing the Young Giant + M&T showcase next week, Motive was recently featured in the Deli’s Best of New York issue last month and have gained some YouTube popularity when their song “Nobody Eats My Dinner” was featured in this video.

CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: Wild Cub

As we continue to prepare for our CMJ 2012 showcase with Young Giant Records, today we will be featuring Nashville’s Wild Cub. When someone says Nashville most people think cowboy hats and fiddles, but if that is what you are expecting from Wild Cub you couldn’t be further off the mark. The band’s 2012 debut release, Youth, features synth-driven riffs and catchy hooks that make it hard to not stand up out of your chair and dance. This summer the group graced the Bonnaroo stages even before their debut record was released, that’s when you know there is something special going on.

Youth is one of the most listenable and enjoyable records that I have encountered this year, with tracks like “Thunder Clatter” (which is featured on our September Spotify Playlist) and “Colour” that are guaranteed to be hits. This is going to be a set that you will not want to miss at CMJ so make sure to stop by Arlene’s Grocery on Thursday October 18th from 12pm-6pm.

CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: The Black Cadillacs

As our CMJ showcase with Young Giant Records comes closer, we will be featuring each of the artists on the lineup to help get you prepared an afternoon of incredible music at Arlene’s Grocery on October 18th. Today we will be featuring a familiar name in Knoxville sextet The Black Cadillacs. The Cads have been touring the country in support of their new record Run which has caught the attention of Paste Magazine, Hypetree and others. Their brand of bluesy southern rock is perfect for a long summer road trip or a fall afternoon in New York City…

Check out “I Know It’s Hard”, one of our favorite tracks from Run, and make sure to keep your calendar open for Thursday October 18th from 12pm-6pm!
