Newport Folk Festival Spotlight: Alabama Shakes

Posted on by doucebox in Newport Folk Festival Spotlight | Leave a comment

I was given the wonderful opportunity to feature the Alabama Shakes in our NFF spotlight series. Led by frontwoman, Brittany Howard, the Shakes have exploded onto the music scene over the last year, doing multiple appearances on late night TV, being named one of MTV’s 11 bands to watch in 2012, along with releasing their first full length album, Boys & Girls.  So, if this is the first you’re hearing of the Alabama Shakes it means two things to me: …

New Music Mondays: Delta Spirit

This week we take a look into the upcoming album from M&T favorites, Delta Spirit.  Their self-titled album is due to come out on March 13th, which will be the official date the band shakes off the “Americana” and “Folk” labels that have followed them around since 2008’s Ode to Sunshine.  Not that being labeled as “Americana” or “Folk” is a bad thing, and it’s something they have greatly appreciated, it’s just not the sound that the band is apparently most …

#9. Dawes- “Fire Away” “Fire Away” starts off as a nice, soft folk tune, and just when you think it’s about to end, oh that’s when we get to the good stuff. It starts with the push of the kick drum, then the call and answer vocals from the Goldsmith brothers, “When you need someone to walk away from/When you need someone to let you in/Through each stumble, shift and sway.” At that point even Jackson Browne, yes that Jackson Browne …

#15. Dawes: Nothing Is Wrong Such an appropriate album title for Dawes’ follow up to North Hills, Nothing Is Wrong,  exactly how I felt after listening to this album over and over again.  The boys from California did it again, bringing back that vintage sound that is so refreshing and comforting.  Taylor Goldsmith continues to grow as a lead man and guitarist.  He really gets to show off his range on this album, featuring soothing vocals on “So Well” to …

#16. Death Cab for Cutie: “You are a Tourist” When I think of how to describe Death Cab for Cutie’s sound, the first word that comes to mind is melancholy. The majority of their music has a gloomy, entrancing feel. Not this track, not “You are a Tourist,” it’s an uplifting, upbeat, pop hit (I never thought I would say that about a DCFC song). The mesmerizing riff was unavoidable this summer.  Every time I turned on the radio I …

#20. Portugal. The Man- In The Mountain In The Cloud Portugal. The Man has released an album every year since 2006.  How many bands can say that?  They are truly becoming musical workhorses.  You might think that the quality of their work would suffer because they are pumping out so many jams in such a short period of time, but it hasn’t.  Even more amazing to me is how each of their albums have a different sound and feel to …

Peter Wolf Crier and Milagres @ The Middle East 9/27/2011

Peter Wolf Crier is currently touring on their recently released album Garden of Arms. Their first stop was at the Middle East (Upstairs) in Cambridge, along with Milagres, who will be accompanying them for part of their 6 week tour. There was also one more opener last night, Some Like it Hot, but the Red Sox were in a pretty important game so we made the executive decision to watch as much of the game as possible. To be completely …

September…I’ve been waiting for you to arrive. No, not because it’s the end of the summer (I’m not some freak that doesn’t like the summer) but because of the amount of shows I have lined up over the next month. I’m literally going to at least two shows a week, every week of September. You may be thinking to yourself; Doucebox, you must be spending a boatload of money? Well my friend, that’s the beautiful part about my September show lineup, most of the shows …

DBJB- Middle Brother

This week on the Jukebox I wanted to present to you my favorite song so far this year, “Blue Eyes” by Middle Brother. If you haven’t heard of Middle Brother by now you must be new to this blog. I’ve probably listened to this song a thousand times and I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it. It’s a shame that Middle Brother isn’t going to tour again, they’re too good not to. Luckily I caught them in January, right when their …

New Music Mondays: Peter Wolf Crier

This week we have a great new track from Peter Wolf Crier, who are set to release their sophomore album, Garden of Arms, on September 6th. The song is called “Settling it Off” and it’s a little different from anything off their debut album, Inter-be. It still has the haunting feel that Pisano and Moen do such a tremendous job creating, but it’s not as overwhelming as some of their other tracks. Most of their songs contain a fuzzy distortion …
