The Apache Relay and The Ballroom Thieves at Great Scott 12/15

If you read up on our Newport Folk Festival 2012 coverage you know how much we loved the Saturday morning set from Nashville’s The Apache Relay. It’s a lot to ask a band to start their set at 1130 in the morning, but to bring as much energy as they did to the Harbor Stage is even more impressive. If you missed Newport this year (first of all shame on you), now you’ve got your chance to catch The Apache Relay this Saturday at Great Scott. Believe us, you’re not going to want to miss this one.

Not only is The Apache Relay one of our favorite NFF ’12 alums, but this Saturday’s opener is one of our favorite local bands right now. If you haven’t heard the news, The Ballroom Thieves are one of the most dynamic and exciting young bands currently on the Boston folk music scene. We had the pleasure of catching them a couple months back at TT’s and their set was, to put it in one word– entrancing. I can’t pinpoint whether it is the unique instrumentation (guitar, cello, and djembe), the beautiful vocal harmonies, or the fact that the trio always look like they’re genuinely enjoying each moment they spend on the stage together, but there is something special about these guys. With an EP under their belts this year, the band will be hitting the studio early next year to record their debut LP which promises to be a release to keep your eye on in 2013. For now though you’ll have to grab your tickets to Saturday’s show and check out a new tune from The Apache Relay that we captured at NFF ’12 along with one of our favorites from The Ballroom Thieves.
