CMJ 2012 Artist Feature: The Hill and Wood

With our most recent posts you may have been thinking that our CMJ showcase with Young Giant Records was all about Tennessee, but today we will be featuring a band from a few hundred miles north in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Hill and Wood is led by Boston native Sam Bush who did the majority of the writing on the band’s debut self-titled album. On their debut The Hill and Wood create layers of sound that are reminiscent of Wilco’s A Ghost Is Born. What THAW has that Wilco doesn’t though (save for “You and I” with Feist) is the element of the male-female harmony on nearly every song. Bush’s voice is joined by Juliana Daugherty to to help create the group’s lush sound and spot-on vocals that can be found throughout their beautifully crafted record.

Check out their video for “The Call” below and make sure to come by Arlene’s Grocery on Thursday October 18 at 12pm to catch the band live.
